The brain is like the headquarters of your body, sitting safely inside your skull. It controls everything you do—thinking, moving, feeling, and remembering. Your brain has three main parts: the cerebrum handles thinking and voluntary movements, the cerebellum controls balance and coordination, and the brainstem manages automatic functions like breathing and heartbeat.
When a footballer like Samuel Chukwueze receives the ball, his brain instantly processes what he sees, decides where to kick it, and commands his leg muscles to move—all in seconds. That's your brain working perfectly. Without your brain, you couldn't learn these notes, play sports, or even stay alive because it keeps your heart beating and lungs working 24/7.
The spinal cord is a thick bundle of nerves that runs down your backbone from your brain to your lower back. Think of it as your body's main telephone cable connecting your brain to all your limbs and organs. When you touch a hot pot of soup on the stove, nerve signals travel up your spinal cord to your brain, which then sends messages back down telling your hand to pull away—all in a split second.
The spinal cord has an important job called a reflex arc. This means some responses happen automatically without waiting for your brain's permission. When you step on a sharp object, your leg pulls away instantly because the spinal cord handles that reaction itself. This protection system keeps you safe during emergencies.
The spinal cord also coordinates movements between your upper and lower body, making activities like running, dancing at a celebration, or playing football possible and smooth.
