The skeleton is your body's framework made up of 206 bones, cartilage, and ligaments working together. Its main job is to support your entire body, keeping you upright whether you're standing in class or playing football at school. These bones also protect your vital organs—your ribs shield your heart and lungs, while your skull protects your brain from injury during accidents or falls.
Another crucial function is movement. Your bones connect with muscles through tendons, allowing you to walk, run, and perform daily activities. Think of a sprinter like Tobi Amusan pushing off the track—her skeleton makes that explosive movement possible.
Your bones also produce blood cells in the bone marrow and store important minerals like calcium and phosphorus that your body needs. Without this system, you'd collapse like a bag of water.
Your skeleton is the framework that makes movement possible. Bones are hard structures that provide support and protection for your body, while joints are the connection points where two bones meet. Without joints, you'd be completely stiff!
When muscles contract, they pull on bones across joints, causing movement. Think of playing football—your leg bones (femur and tibia) connect at the knee joint, allowing you to kick the ball. The hip joint lets your leg move in different directions for running and jumping.
Different joints allow different types of movement. Hinge joints like your knee and elbow bend in one direction only. Ball-and-socket joints at your shoulder and hip allow movement in multiple directions, which is why you can throw a ball so far.
Understanding how bones and joints work together is essential because examiners often ask you to explain movement at specific joints.
