The heart is a powerful muscular organ that pumps blood throughout your body. This muscle, called the myocardium, works continuously without you thinking about it. Think of it like the engine of a car—it needs to be strong and healthy to keep everything running smoothly.
The heart muscle contracts and relaxes in a rhythmic pattern. When it contracts, it pushes blood out to all parts of your body, just like when a Nigerian trader squeezes water from a cloth. When it relaxes, the heart fills up with fresh blood. This happens about seventy times per minute in a healthy person.
Regular exercise, like football or running, makes your heart muscle stronger. A strong heart pumps more efficiently, meaning it doesn't have to work as hard to deliver oxygen to your tissues. This is why athletes have healthier hearts than inactive people.
When you exercise regularly, your heart becomes stronger and more efficient. This happens because exercise forces your heart to pump faster and harder, making it work like any muscle that gets trained. Over time, the heart adapts by increasing its stroke volume, meaning it pumps more blood with each beat.
Regular physical activity improves your heart's ability to deliver oxygen to muscles. Think of a footballer training daily at the Lekki Sports Complex—his heart becomes stronger, beats more slowly at rest, and recovers faster after matches. This is called a lower resting heart rate, which means your heart is working more efficiently.
Exercise also strengthens blood vessels and reduces the risk of heart disease. Your heart becomes more powerful, your circulation improves, and you have better overall cardiovascular fitness.
The circulatory system is basically your body's transport network that moves blood around continuously. Think of it like the road system in Lagos – blood vessels are the roads, your heart is the engine pumping blood through them, and blood carries oxygen and nutrients to every cell in your body.
Blood circulation happens in two main pathways. Pulmonary circulation takes deoxygenated blood from your heart to the lungs to pick up oxygen, then returns it. Systemic circulation then pumps this oxygen-rich blood to every part of your body through arteries, capillaries, and veins. Your veins bring the used blood back to your heart, and the cycle repeats continuously, similar to how water circulates through a central water supply system in Nigerian homes.

The main functions of blood are transportation, protection, and regulation. First, blood carries oxygen from your lungs to every cell in your body and brings back carbon dioxide to be removed. Second, it transports nutrients from food digestion to cells for energy and growth. Third, blood contains white cells that fight infections and diseases protecting you from illness. Fourth, blood helps regulate your body temperature, which is why Nigerians who engage in strenuous activities like long-distance running need proper hydration—their blood works harder to cool the body.
Blood also carries hormones that control body functions and clots to stop bleeding when you get injured.
Blood circulation in your body works through two main pathways. Pulmonary circulation is the first type, where blood travels from your heart to the lungs to pick up oxygen, then returns to the heart. Think of it like going to a filling station to get fuel. Systemic circulation is the second type, where oxygen-rich blood is pumped from the heart to all parts of your body—your brain, muscles, organs, and skin—then returns to the heart as deoxygenated blood. If you've ever felt your pulse on your neck or wrist after playing football, that's systemic circulation at work, delivering oxygen to your muscles so you can keep running. Both circulations work together continuously to keep you alive and healthy. Without these two systems working properly, your body cannot function well.
