Air-borne diseases spread through tiny droplets released when an infected person coughs, sneezes or talks. These droplets float in the air and enter another person's respiratory system. Common cold, measles, whooping cough, poliomyelitis, tuberculosis and cerebro-spinal meningitis all spread this way.
For example, when your classmate has measles and sneezes in class without covering their mouth, the virus travels through the air to infect others nearby. Tuberculosis spreads similarly when an infected person coughs. Cerebro-spinal meningitis, which causes severe fever and neck stiffness, spreads rapidly in crowded places like dormitories, making it a serious public health concern in Nigeria.
Prevention includes covering your mouth when coughing, maintaining good ventilation, wearing masks when around sick people, and keeping vaccinations current. Isolation of infected persons is crucial to stop transmission.
Water and food-borne diseases spread when people consume contaminated water or food containing harmful microorganisms. Dysentery causes severe diarrhea with blood in stool, while cholera leads to extreme watery diarrhea and dehydration. Typhoid fever is a bacterial infection causing prolonged fever and body weakness. Schistosomiasis occurs when parasites enter your body through contaminated water during bathing or swimming.
Nigeria experiences frequent cholera outbreaks, particularly during rainy seasons when poor sanitation contaminates water supplies in areas like Lagos and northern states. These diseases thrive where there's limited access to clean water, poor hygiene practices, and inadequate waste disposal. Prevention depends on drinking treated water, proper food preparation, and maintaining good personal hygiene. Understanding these diseases helps you recognize symptoms early and seek appropriate medical treatment.
Insect-borne diseases are sicknesses spread to humans through bites from infected insects. Malaria, the most common in Nigeria, is transmitted by female Anopheles mosquitoes carrying the Plasmodium parasite. Yellow fever also spreads through mosquito bites and causes fever, jaundice, and organ damage. Trypanosomiasis, known locally as sleeping sickness, comes from tsetse fly bites and affects the nervous system. Filariasis, spread by mosquitoes and blackflies, causes painful swelling of limbs called elephantiasis.
What makes these diseases spread easily in Nigeria is our warm, humid climate that helps insects multiply rapidly. Poor sanitation and inadequate drainage systems around homes create perfect breeding grounds for mosquitoes. Each disease requires different prevention methods, though using insecticides, mosquito nets, and environmental sanitation generally help reduce transmission.
