Disease prevention and control means stopping illnesses from spreading and reducing their impact on people. The main idea is that it's better to prevent disease than to treat it after it happens. Prevention works at three levels: stopping disease from occurring at all (like vaccination against measles), catching it early before serious damage happens (like health screening), and managing it properly once someone is sick (like taking malaria medication correctly).
Nigeria has successfully used prevention strategies with polio vaccination campaigns. Years ago, polio paralyzed many Nigerian children, but through mass immunization programmes across states, the disease is now almost eliminated. This shows how organized prevention saves lives and money compared to treating the disease.
Good prevention includes clean water, proper sanitation, healthy eating, exercise, and regular health check-ups. When communities practice these habits together, diseases spread less easily.
