WAEC SSCE Health Science
Study notes for Beverages — part of the WAEC SSCE Health Science syllabus. 1 learning objectives with explanations and exam tips.
Beverages are drinks we consume daily, and they're grouped into two main categories. Non-alcoholic beverages contain no alcohol and include water, juice, tea, coffee, and soft drinks. These drinks are safe for everyone, including children, and provide hydration and nutrients. Alcoholic beverages, however, contain ethanol (alcohol) produced through fermentation. Examples include beer, wine, and spirits like gin and vodka. In Nigeria, palm wine is a traditional alcoholic beverage.
The effects differ significantly. Non-alcoholic drinks generally improve health and energy levels. Alcoholic beverages, when consumed excessively, damage the liver, impair judgment, cause addiction, and increase disease risk. Even moderate consumption can affect coordination and decision-making. Understanding these differences is crucial for making healthy choices.
