Study notes for Food Preparation — part of the WAEC SSCE Health Science syllabus. 1 learning objectives with explanations and exam tips.
Food hygiene simply means keeping food clean and safe from harmful germs before eating it. When you prepare food, bacteria and other microorganisms can contaminate it if you're not careful, causing serious illnesses like typhoid or food poisoning.
The main principles include washing your hands thoroughly before touching any food, keeping your cooking area clean, and storing food properly. For example, when your mother prepares jollof rice at home, she should wash the rice well, use clean utensils, and ensure the pot is sanitized. Raw foods like meat should be kept separate from cooked foods to prevent cross-contamination. Also, food should be cooked at proper temperatures to kill harmful germs.
Good food hygiene protects you and your family from getting sick. It's a daily practice that takes just a few extra minutes but saves lives.
