Multivibrators are electronic circuits that produce non-sinusoidal (square or rectangular) waves instead of smooth sine waves. Think of them as electronic switches that turn on and off repeatedly. The three main types are astable (free-running), monostable (one-shot), and bistable (flip-flop). Astable multivibrators oscillate continuously without external triggers, making them perfect for generating clock signals in digital devices. You'll find them in the timing circuits of Nigerian digital alarm clocks and electronic voting machines used in elections. These circuits form the foundation of digital electronics because logic gates—like AND, OR, NOT, and NAND gates—use these switching principles to process digital information (1s and 0s). Understanding how multivibrators create pulses helps you grasp how computers perform calculations and make logical decisions.
