Lubrication is the process of applying oil to reduce friction between moving engine parts. Think of it like using palm oil on your hands when they're dry and rough – the oil makes them smooth and prevents damage. Engines need lubrication because metal parts rubbing together create heat and wear. Without oil, your engine would seize up like a rusty padlock.
There are two main types: boundary layer lubrication happens when parts almost touch, with just a thin oil layer between them, while film lubrication creates a thicker protective oil cushion that keeps parts completely separated. In Nigerian conditions, cars often experience boundary lubrication during cold starts before the engine warms up properly.
Key lubricated parts include the crankshaft, camshaft, pistons, and valve lifters. The engine oil pump circulates oil through passages to reach all these components, keeping everything running smoothly and cool.

Engine lubrication keeps moving parts smooth and reduces friction that causes wear and heat. Three main systems deliver oil: splash lubrication relies on moving parts flinging oil around the engine naturally, commonly found in older Nigerian commercial vehicles like Peugeot 504s. Forced lubrication uses an oil pump to pressurize and spray oil directly where needed, found in modern cars. Petroil is a petrol-oil mixture used in two-stroke engines like motorcycle generators popular across Nigeria.
Oil pumps work simply: gear pumps use interlocking gears to trap and push oil forward, while rotor pumps use rotating lobes for the same purpose. Oil filters remove dirt and particles before oil circulates, protecting engine components from damage and extending engine life significantly.
Lubrication means applying oil to moving parts so they slide smoothly without grinding together. Think of it like applying Vaseline to prevent your skin from cracking—engines need this protection too. Different parts need different oil thicknesses. SAE numbers like 10W-40 tell you the oil's viscosity or thickness. The "W" means winter grade, showing how the oil flows in cold weather, while the number after shows summer performance.
Engines need heavy oil to protect pistons and cylinders. Your car's gearbox requires thicker oil because it handles massive forces.
