The cooling system removes heat from your car engine through three main processes. Conduction happens when heat travels directly through metal parts—imagine touching a hot engine block; the heat flows into your hand. Convection occurs when coolant liquid circulates around the engine, absorbing heat and carrying it away to the radiator. Think of how hot water in a bucket cools faster when you stir it. Radiation is when heat escapes into the air as the radiator releases warmth.
Your car's cooling system works like this: hot coolant from the engine flows to the radiator where fans blow air across its fins. This cools the liquid which returns to repeat the cycle. Picture a Lagos commercial bus with steam rising from its bonnet on a hot afternoon—that's radiation happening. Without this heat transfer process, engines would overheat and seize.
The cooling system prevents your engine from overheating by circulating water through hot engine parts to absorb heat, then releasing it outside. Think of it like the radiator in your family home during harmattan season—it keeps things cool.
In a thermo-syphon system, hot water naturally rises while cold water sinks, creating circulation without a pump. Modern cars use pump-assisted systems where an electric pump forces water through faster, cooling more efficiently. A pressurized system increases water's boiling point, allowing higher temperatures without damage.
The thermostat is crucial—it's like a temperature gatekeeper controlling water flow. Wax pellet thermostats contain wax that expands when hot, opening a valve to let water circulate.
