Sectioning in Technical Drawing

Sectioning means cutting through an object to show its internal structure. Think of it like slicing through a loaf of bread to see inside. Full sections cut completely through the object, while half sections cut only halfway, useful when symmetry exists. Part sections remove only a small portion to reveal specific internal details without confusing the drawing.

Offset sections bend the cutting line to pass through important features that don't align vertically. Broken sections use a zigzag line to show multiple internal areas. Removed sections are placed separately on the drawing for clarity. Aligned sections rotate internal features to show them accurately, and revolved sections rotate the cut portion right on the same view.

A practical example: when drawing a Nigerian wooden chair's internal structure, you'd use a full section to show the wood grain patterns and joint construction inside the armrest.

💡 Exam tip: always remember that sectioning lines should be hatched with 45-degree parallel lines, and the direction of cutting must be clearly marked with arrows on your drawing.
