In technical drawing, understanding how lines and planes exist in three-dimensional space is crucial. A line in space can be positioned at various angles, and determining its true length requires orthographic projection onto appropriate planes. Think of a ladder leaning against a wall at an angle—its true length differs from what you see from certain viewpoints.
When two lines meet, they intersect, and their relationship tells us important information about the design. Planes are flat surfaces that can be perpendicular, parallel, or oblique to the projection planes. In Nigeria's architecture, consider how roof slopes meet vertical walls—these demonstrate plane relationships perfectly.
Edge views of planes show their actual shape when viewed directly, while traces represent where planes intersect the projection planes. Mastering these concepts helps you solve complex three-dimensional drawing problems accurately.
