A projectile is simply any object that gets thrown or released into space and then moves under the influence of gravity alone. Once you release it, gravity pulls it downward while it continues moving forward. This combination creates a curved path called a parabola.
Think about a footballer kicking a ball across the field during a match. The moment the ball leaves the player's foot, it becomes a projectile. Gravity immediately starts pulling it down, but the initial kick gave it forward motion, so the ball traces a curved path through the air before landing on the ground.
The key thing to remember is that a projectile has two independent motions happening together: horizontal motion (which stays constant) and vertical motion (which changes because gravity accelerates it downward). These two motions combine to create the curved trajectory you observe.
