Finding problems to solve in metalwork means looking around your environment—market, classroom, lorry park, or workshop—and spotting things that need improvement. For example, market vendors in Lagos often struggle with unstable wooden benches that collapse easily. This is your problem. The benefit of solving it is creating a stronger, safer workspace that lasts longer and prevents injuries.
To generate solutions, you investigate through interviews with vendors, observe how they work, visit similar markets, and sketch different design ideas. You might design a metal-framed bench that's cheaper than wood, more durable, and easier to repair. Next, select the best solution by considering simplicity, material availability, and cost. A simple welded frame design using locally-sourced mild steel is better than complex designs requiring imported materials.
