WAEC SSCE Electronics
Study notes for OTHER SEMICONDUCTOR — part of the WAEC SSCE Electronics syllabus. 1 learning objectives with explanations and exam tips.
Beyond simple diodes and transistors, engineers use special semiconductor devices for different jobs. A thermistor is a resistor that changes resistance when temperature changes—you'll find these in air conditioners and thermostats throughout Nigeria. Thyristors like triacs and diacs are powerful switches used in controlling electricity, especially in industrial equipment and motor speed controllers. The triac, for example, controls the brightness of bulbs and speed of fans in many Nigerian homes.
Integrated circuits pack thousands of transistors onto a tiny chip, doing complex jobs in calculators, phones, and televisions. Think of your phone's processor—that's an integrated circuit handling millions of operations. These devices made modern electronics possible and affordable for everyday Nigerians.
Understanding how each device switches or responds to conditions helps you predict circuit behavior in problems.
