Measuring instruments are tools we use to check electrical quantities like voltage, current, and resistance in circuits. Think of them like your thermometer at home—they tell you if something is normal or problematic. The basic principle is simple: these devices detect electrical signals and convert them into readings you can understand on a dial or screen.
To protect measuring instruments from damage, we use methods like inserting protective resistances and fuses. For example, an ammeter measuring current in a Lagos factory's electrical system needs a shunt resistor to prevent it from burning out if too much current flows through. Similarly, a voltmeter requires a multiplier resistor for protection.
Common Nigerian examples include using multimeters in phone repair shops to test battery voltage or checking continuity in circuit boards. These instruments work because internal coils react to magnetic fields, creating movements that show measurements.
