ELECTRON EMISSION

Electron emission is the process where electrons escape from the surface of a material, usually a metal. This happens when the material receives enough energy to overcome the forces holding electrons in place. Think of it like students rushing out of school gates when the bell rings—they need enough energy to leave.

There are three main types: thermionic emission occurs when heat energy is applied, like in old television sets or bulbs where a heated filament releases electrons. Photoelectric emission happens when light hits a metal surface, used in camera light sensors. Field emission occurs when a strong electric field pulls electrons away from the material.

In Nigeria, thermionic emission powers the cathode ray tubes in older television sets that many households still use. The heated filament inside produces the electrons needed to create the picture on your screen.
