CIRCUIT COMPONENTS AND ARRANGEMENT

Resistors, capacitors, and inductors are the three main building blocks of electronic circuits. Resistors control current flow and are measured in ohms (Ω), while capacitors store electrical energy and are measured in farads (F). Inductors oppose changes in current and are measured in henries (H). Think of resistors like traffic officers controlling vehicle flow on Lagos roads—they slow things down.

Circuits can be arranged in series, where components connect one after another like beads on a string, or parallel, where they connect side by side like roads branching off a highway. In series circuits, current stays the same everywhere but voltage divides. In parallel circuits, voltage stays constant but current divides among branches.

Resistor colour codes use coloured bands to show their resistance value—gold means divide by ten, while silver means divide by hundred. A typical 4-band resistor might have brown-black-red-gold markings indicating specific values.

💡 Exam tip: Always remember that in series circuits total resistance increases, but in parallel circuits total resistance decreases—this is the opposite of what many students wrongly assume.
