Baptism and Temptation of Jesus

The baptism of Jesus was when John the Baptist immersed Jesus in the River Jordan. This happened at the start of Jesus's ministry and marked God's public approval of His Son. During this event, the Holy Spirit descended on Jesus like a dove, and God's voice from heaven declared, "This is my Son, whom I love; with him I am well pleased."

Think of baptism like a Nigerian naming ceremony where a child is officially presented to the community and given a new identity. Just as parents bring their baby before witnesses to be recognized, Jesus was publicly acknowledged by God as the promised Messiah. John the Baptist initially hesitated to baptize Jesus because he felt unworthy, but Jesus insisted to fulfill all righteousness. This baptism demonstrated Jesus's humility and His willingness to identify with humanity's need for repentance.

After his baptism, Jesus was led into the wilderness where Satan tempted him for forty days. Temptation means being tested or encouraged to do something wrong. Satan offered Jesus three main temptations: turning stones into bread when hungry, jumping from the temple to prove God would save him, and gaining all the world's kingdoms by worshipping Satan. Jesus rejected each temptation by quoting Scripture, showing that obedience to God's word is more important than satisfying physical desires or gaining worldly power.

This story teaches us that even good people face temptations. Like a student who's offered money to cheat in exams, Jesus had to choose between what was easy and what was right. His victory shows us that we can overcome temptation through faith and God's word.
