Bacteria in the Alimentary System

Different animals have different alimentary tracts suited to their diets. Herbivores like cows have long intestines with a rumen for digesting plant materials, while carnivores like lions have shorter alimentary canals since meat is easier to digest. Bacteria play crucial roles in these systems by breaking down food materials that enzymes alone cannot process. In the human colon, bacteria like Escherichia coli produce vitamins K and B12, which our body absorbs for blood clotting and energy metabolism. These bacteria also ferment undigested carbohydrates, producing gases and short-chain fatty acids that nourish our gut walls.
