Seeds, Seedlings, Fruits and Storage Organs of Crops

A seed is a mature ovule containing an embryo plant that can grow into a new plant. When that seed germinates and develops its first leaves above ground, it becomes a seedling. Fruits develop from the flower's ovary after fertilization and protect seeds inside them. Storage organs are plant parts that accumulate food reserves for future growth—these include roots like cassava tubers, stems like yam tubers, and bulbs like onions. In Nigeria, we see perfect examples daily: the cassava plant stores starch in its tuberous roots which we harvest and process into garri, while yam tubers serve the same purpose for yam plants. Understanding these different parts matters because they represent different stages of crop development and different economic value to farmers across Nigeria.
