Planting dates refer to the best time to sow your seeds for maximum yield. In Nigeria, maize should be planted at the onset of the rainy season, usually April to May in the south and June to July in the north. Seed rate is the amount of seeds needed per hectare of land. For example, maize requires about 20-25 kg of seeds per hectare, while cassava needs 12-15 tonnes of cuttings per hectare. Seed quality tests ensure your seeds are viable and disease-free before planting. These tests check for germination percentage, moisture content, and pest damage.

Using high-quality seeds at the right planting date with correct seed rates guarantees better crop performance and higher harvests. Poor quality seeds will germinate weakly and produce stunted plants regardless of how well you manage your farm.
