Agricultural Ecology Study Notes

Agricultural ecology is the science of understanding how farming systems work with their natural environment. Think of it as studying the relationship between crops, animals, soil, water, and weather on a farm. When farmers plant crops, they don't just work alone—they work with nature. The soil provides nutrients, rainfall provides water, and insects help with pollination.

A perfect Nigerian example is yam farming in the Middle Belt region. Farmers there practice crop rotation and intercropping, planting yams with cassava and vegetables. This system protects the soil from erosion during the rainy season, maintains soil fertility naturally, and reduces pest problems better than planting yam alone would.
