Agricultural extension is simply the process of bringing improved farming methods and knowledge from research centres directly to farmers in their communities. Think of extension agents as bridges between scientists and the people working the land. These agents teach farmers about better seeds, modern techniques, pest control, and soil management through demonstrations, visits, and training programmes.
This matters greatly because most Nigerian farmers still use traditional methods that give low yields. Extension services help increase production and income. For example, the Agricultural Development Programme (ADP) in different states works with cassava and maize farmers, showing them how to use improved varieties and better spacing. When farmers adopt these practices, their harvests improve significantly.
Extension also helps farmers access credit, markets, and new technologies. Without this crucial link, innovations stay trapped in universities while farmers struggle with outdated methods.
