Think of them as a universal language that any technical person can understand, regardless of which country they're from. The diameter symbol, represented by a circle with a line through it (⌀), is one of the most important symbols you'll encounter. This symbol tells you the width of a circular object measured straight across through its centre. For example, if you're drawing a circular pipe used in Nigerian construction projects, you'd write ⌀50mm to indicate that the pipe has a diameter of fifty millimetres. Other common symbols include the radius symbol (R), the degree symbol (°), and the perpendicular symbol (⊥). Learning these conventions is essential because they save space on drawings and prevent confusion about measurements and specifications.
