A simple framed structure is basically a skeleton made of connected bars or members that work together to support loads. Think of a traditional Hausa house roof framework or the steel beams supporting a market stall – these are frames. When weight is applied to the frame, it creates reactions at the support points where the structure touches the ground. These reactions prevent the structure from collapsing.
Internal forces develop inside each member as the load travels through the frame. Members experience either tension (pulling apart) or compression (pushing together). For example, a diagonal brace in a wooden gate experiences compression when the gate's weight pushes down, while another member nearby might be in tension, holding things together.
To solve these problems, you apply equilibrium equations: sum of horizontal forces equals zero, sum of vertical forces equals zero, and sum of moments equals zero.
