Simple harmonic motion is the back-and-forth movement of an object around a central point, where the object takes equal time to complete each swing. Think of a pendulum in a grandfather clock—it swings left, then right, then left again, always returning to the same position.
The key feature of S.H.M is that the force pulling the object back toward its resting position is always proportional to how far it has moved away. Imagine plucking a guitar string; it vibrates up and down around its rest position. Each complete vibration follows the same pattern every single time. S.H.M occurs everywhere—in pendulum clocks, springs, and even in the vibration of drum surfaces during traditional Yoruba festivals.
The motion is predictable and repeating, which makes it very important in physics.
