Energy exists in many different forms around us every day. Mechanical energy is what you see when a car moves or when you kick a football. Thermal energy is heat—like the warmth from fire or sunshine. Electrical energy powers your phone and home appliances. Chemical energy is stored in food and fuel; when you eat, your body breaks down that chemical energy to help you run and play. Light energy travels from the sun and helps plants grow. Sound energy is what you hear from music or voices. Nuclear energy comes from splitting atoms and produces tremendous power. The important thing to remember is that all these forms can change from one type to another. When you burn wood, chemical energy becomes thermal and light energy. In a torch, electrical energy becomes light and heat. Understanding these forms helps you see how energy works in your everyday life, from cooking with gas to charging your phone.
Energy resources are sources from which we obtain power to run our homes, industries, and vehicles. The world depends on two main types: renewable and non-renewable resources. Non-renewable resources like crude oil, natural gas, and coal get depleted over time and cannot be quickly replenished. Nigeria is a major oil-producing nation that relies heavily on petroleum as its primary energy source, earning billions in revenue annually. Renewable resources such as solar energy, wind, hydroelectric, and geothermal power can be naturally replenished and are environmentally friendly. These sustainable sources are becoming increasingly important as the world faces climate change and energy scarcity. Understanding these resources helps us appreciate why countries invest in diversifying their energy mix to ensure long-term sustainability and reduced pollution.

Energy cannot be created or destroyed; it can only change from one form to another. This is the law of conservation of energy. Think of it like money in your wallet—you can exchange naira for dollars, but the total value remains the same if there's no loss.
Consider a generator in a Nigerian home. Chemical energy in diesel fuel converts to mechanical energy that spins the engine, which then produces electrical energy powering your lights and TV. No energy disappears; it transforms. Some energy does escape as heat (why generators get hot), but that heat energy still exists—it just moves into the surroundings.
When solving energy problems, always remember that the total energy at the start equals the total energy at the end, plus any energy lost to friction or heat. This principle helps you track what happens to energy in any system.
