The electromagnetic spectrum consists of different types of radiation arranged by their wavelengths and frequencies. These include radio waves, microwaves, infrared, visible light, ultraviolet, X-rays, and gamma rays. Each type has unique properties and uses. Radio waves have the longest wavelengths and are used for broadcasting—you hear them through radio stations like Cool FM in Lagos. Microwaves heat food in ovens and carry mobile phone signals. Infrared radiation is heat energy you feel from the sun. Visible light is the only radiation your eyes can detect, ranging from red to violet. Ultraviolet rays from the sun can burn your skin, which is why sunscreen matters in Nigeria's tropical climate. X-rays help doctors see inside your body, while gamma rays are the most dangerous and come from radioactive substances. The key thing to remember is that all these radiations travel at the same speed in vacuum but differ in wavelength and frequency.
