Major Muscles of the Body

Skeletal muscles are the muscles attached to your bones that help you move around. They work together with your skeleton to enable activities like running, jumping, and lifting. The major muscles in your body include the biceps in your upper arm, which helps you bend your elbow, and the triceps which straightens it. Your quadriceps muscles in the thigh are essential for walking and climbing stairs, while your hamstrings at the back of your thigh work with them. The pectoralis major in your chest helps you push objects, and your deltoids in the shoulders allow arm movement. Your abdominal muscles support your posture and protect your organs. When you climb a ladder to pick mangoes from a tree, your leg and arm muscles are all working together. These major muscle groups must work in coordination to produce smooth, controlled movements.

Types of Muscle Contraction

Muscle Cramp: Causes, Prevention and First Aid

A muscle cramp is a sudden, involuntary and painful contraction of a skeletal muscle that lasts for a few seconds to minutes. When you watch a footballer suddenly grab his leg during a match and fall to the ground, that's a muscle cramp. Cramps happen when muscles tighten uncontrollably, usually due to dehydration, electrolyte loss through excessive sweating, or muscle fatigue from intense exercise.

To prevent cramps, drink plenty of water before and during physical activity, warm up properly, and stretch after exercise. Eating foods rich in potassium like bananas and drinking sports drinks containing electrolytes also helps. When a cramp occurs, stop the activity immediately, gently stretch the affected muscle, apply heat or massage the area, and rest. These simple steps provide relief and prevent serious injury.
