Track events are running competitions that take place on an oval-shaped athletic track, usually 400 metres in length. These events test your speed, endurance, and tactical ability depending on the distance covered. Common track events include sprints like 100m and 200m which demand explosive speed, middle-distance races like 800m and 1500m requiring balanced pace management, and long-distance events like 5000m and 10,000m testing stamina and mental toughness.
Nigeria has produced excellent track athletes over the decades. Blessing Okagbare, for instance, competed successfully in both sprints and long jumps at international levels, showcasing African athletic talent. Each track event has specific techniques and training methods. Sprinters focus on explosive starts and maintaining maximum velocity, while distance runners develop aerobic capacity through consistent training. Short distance races, also called sprints, are running events that cover distances between 100 metres and 400 metres. These races demand explosive power, maximum speed, and excellent technique from athletes. The 100m and 200m races are the most common sprint events you'll encounter in athletics competitions across Nigeria.
Nigerian sprinter Blessing Okagbare has represented our country in these events at international levels, showing what dedication to short distance racing can achieve. In a 100m sprint, athletes must explode from the starting blocks and maintain top speed throughout the entire race. The 200m requires runners to navigate a curve while maintaining their pace, making it technically demanding.

Hurdles races like the 110m or 100m hurdles combine sprinting with jumping over barriers placed at regular intervals on the track. Sprint start positions refer to the different body postures sprinters use when beginning a race. The bunch start (or bullet start) sees athletes crouch very low with their hips raised high above their shoulders, creating a compact, explosive position. The medium start places hips slightly higher than the bunch position, offering balance between power and readiness. The elongated start has hips lower and legs more extended, making it easier to transition into running but requiring more time to generate force.

A relay race is a running event where four athletes on the same team take turns covering set distances, passing a baton to each other. Each runner completes their portion, called a leg, before handing the baton to their teammate. The race isn't finished until the final runner crosses the finish line while holding the baton. The most common relay races are the 4×100 metres and 4×400 metres, meaning four runners cover either 100 or 400 metres each.
What makes relay racing special is that it's not just about individual speed—teamwork matters tremendously. The baton exchange is critical because a poor handover can cost precious seconds or result in disqualification. Nigerian schools regularly compete in relay races during inter-school athletics competitions, where teams from different states battle for glory. Success depends on smooth coordination between runners and proper baton technique during exchanges.
Hurdle events are races where athletes sprint over a series of barriers called hurdles while running on a track. There are two main types: high hurdles and low hurdles. High hurdles, typically 110m or 100m races, require athletes to jump over taller barriers, demanding explosive power and coordination. Low hurdles, usually 400m races, involve shorter obstacles and test speed combined with endurance since the distance is longer.
The key to success in hurdling is maintaining speed between hurdles while using proper technique—clearing each barrier efficiently without breaking stride. Athletes like Nigeria's Tobi Amusan, who competes in the 100m hurdles at international level, exemplify the explosive power needed for these events.
The hurdler's body position, stride length, and recovery time between hurdles are critical factors. Beginners often slow down approaching hurdles, which costs valuable time.
Middle distance races are running events that fall between sprints and long-distance races. The 800 metres and 1,500 metres are the two main middle-distance events in athletics. These races demand a special combination of speed and endurance because runners must maintain a fast pace over a longer distance than sprints but without the extreme endurance needed for marathon running.
The 800m takes roughly two minutes to complete, while the 1,500m (also called the mile) takes around four minutes. Nigerian athlete Nadia Eke has competed excellently in middle-distance events, representing our country internationally. Success in these events requires proper pacing strategy—runners cannot start too fast or they'll tire before the finish line. Training involves interval workouts and tempo runs to build both speed and aerobic capacity.
The 3000 metres steeplechase is a long-distance running event that combines speed and agility. Runners must complete 3000 metres around a standard track while jumping over fixed hurdles and water obstacles. There are 28 hurdles and 7 water jumps positioned at specific intervals throughout the race. The water jump is the most challenging obstacle because runners must clear both a hurdle and a water-filled pit, making this event quite demanding.
Nigeria has produced competitive steeplechase runners over the years, with athletes regularly competing in continental championships. Success in this event requires exceptional endurance, perfect timing for jumps, and mental toughness to handle the repetitive obstacles while maintaining speed.
