Soft soldering is a metal joining method using a filler metal called solder that melts at low temperatures, usually below 450°C. Unlike welding, the base metals don't melt—only the solder does, creating a bond when it cools and hardens. You'll use tools like soldering irons, solder wire, flux, and a heat source to join metals permanently yet reversibly.
Common artifacts include decorative boxes, electrical components, and jewelry pieces made from copper or brass. For example, many Nigerian artisans in Lagos metalwork centers use soft soldering to create beautiful copper water vessels and decorative plaques sold in markets.
The process involves cleaning metal surfaces, applying flux to prevent oxidation, heating the joint with a soldering iron, applying solder to melt onto the joint, then allowing it to cool completely for a strong bond.
