Heat treatment makes hand tools stronger and more useful for their jobs. When we heat metals to specific temperatures and cool them in controlled ways, we change how they behave. A machete, which is commonly used in Nigerian farms, needs heat treatment to stay sharp and not break easily when cutting tough plants.
Annealing is a process where metal is heated until it glows, then cooled slowly. This makes brittle metal softer and easier to shape. Case hardening is different—it heats the outer surface of a tool to make it very hard while keeping the inside slightly flexible. This prevents tools from shattering when struck.
For example, a Nigerian blacksmith heating a cutlass blade and cooling it carefully in oil creates a harder edge that lasts longer during farming work. Without heat treatment, tools would become dull quickly or break under pressure.
