WAEC SSCE Marketing
Study notes for Marketing Concepts — part of the WAEC SSCE Marketing syllabus. 2 learning objectives with explanations and exam tips.
Marketing is simply the process of identifying what customers need and want, then providing products or services to satisfy those needs while making a profit. It's not just about selling; it's about understanding people and creating value for them. Marketing involves activities like researching what customers like, creating appealing products, setting fair prices, promoting goods through advertising, and ensuring products reach customers conveniently.
Think of Dangote Cement as a perfect Nigerian example. The company researches construction needs across Nigeria, produces quality cement at competitive prices, advertises through TV and billboards, and distributes cement to retailers nationwide. This entire process from understanding builders' needs to delivering cement at local shops is marketing.
Marketing succeeds when businesses truly understand their customers and build long-term relationships rather than just making one-time sales.
Marketing concepts are different ways businesses think about selling their products. The production concept focuses on making goods cheaply and in large quantities. The product concept emphasizes quality and features instead. The selling concept pushes hard to convince customers to buy, while the marketing concept listens to what customers want first, then produces it.
Finally, societal marketing goes further by considering how products affect society and the environment. A brilliant Nigerian example is Dangote Cement, which shifted from just producing cement to understanding customer needs for quality and affordability, while also investing in environmental sustainability.
Understanding these five concepts helps companies succeed differently. Some work better in certain situations than others. Nando's in Nigeria, for instance, uses a marketing concept by constantly studying what Nigerian customers prefer and adjusting their menu accordingly.
