Pollution as an Environmental Health Problem

Pollution happens when harmful substances get into our environment and make it unsafe for living things. These harmful materials, called pollutants, come from human activities and damage the air, water, and soil we depend on. When pollution gets bad enough, it causes serious health problems for people, animals, and plants.

Nigeria faces major pollution challenges. For example, in Lagos and Port Harcourt, air pollution from vehicle emissions and industrial factories causes respiratory diseases like asthma and bronchitis in many residents. Water pollution from oil spillage in the Niger Delta has contaminated drinking water sources and made people sick. Soil pollution from improper waste disposal also affects food production and health.

The main pollutants you should know are: smoke from burning fossil fuels, harmful chemicals from factories, plastic waste, and oil spills. These pollutants travel through air, water, and soil, reaching human bodies through breathing, drinking, and eating contaminated food.
