Your nervous system is like Nigeria's communication network—it sends messages throughout your body to control everything you do. This system has two main parts: the central nervous system (brain and spinal cord) and the peripheral nervous system (nerves throughout your body).
The brain is your command centre, receiving information and making decisions. Your spinal cord is the main highway connecting your brain to the rest of your body. Nerves are like telephone wires carrying messages between your brain and organs. For example, when you touch a hot cooking pot in your kitchen, sensory nerves instantly tell your brain, which immediately commands muscles to pull your hand away—all in a split second.
Each part works together perfectly. Neurons (nerve cells) transmit electrical and chemical signals that coordinate movement, thinking, breathing, and heartbeat. This coordination keeps you alive and functioning daily.
The nervous system controls two types of body actions. Voluntary actions are movements you decide to do consciously. When you pick up your pen to write an exam question, that's voluntary—your brain sends signals and you control it. Involuntary actions happen automatically without you thinking about them. Your heart beating, digestion, and blinking are involuntary because your body does them naturally.
Think about this Nigerian example: when you touch a hot cooking pot, you pull your hand away instantly without thinking. That's a reflex action, which is involuntary and happens through the spinal cord, not your brain. But if you deliberately reach for the pot to check food, that's voluntary because your brain directs it.
The key difference is that voluntary actions involve conscious thought and the cerebrum, while involuntary actions are automatic and controlled by the spinal cord or autonomic nervous system.
The nervous system controls everything your body does, from thinking to moving. When something goes wrong with your brain, spinal cord, or nerves, we call it a nervous system disorder. These disorders can affect how you think, feel, or move.
Common disorders include epilepsy, which causes sudden seizures where the body shakes uncontrollably. Stroke happens when blood flow to the brain stops, causing weakness or paralysis. Parkinson's disease makes movement difficult and shaky. In Nigeria, many people suffer strokes due to high blood pressure and stress.
Other disorders include meningitis, an infection of the brain's protective covering, and cerebral palsy, which affects movement from birth. Alzheimer's disease causes memory loss in elderly people. These conditions can be serious, but early detection and proper treatment help manage symptoms and improve quality of life.
