Objective 1 of 1
CHEMICAL SUBSTANCES THAT ALTER BEHAVIOUR

Chemical substances that alter behaviour are drugs and chemicals that change how your brain works and affect your actions, mood, and thinking. These substances interfere with your nervous system by changing the levels of chemicals called neurotransmitters in your brain. When these brain chemicals become imbalanced, you may experience changes in how you feel, think, or behave.

Common examples include alcohol, cannabis, cocaine, and prescription medications used incorrectly. In Nigeria, many young people abuse substances like codeine-based cough syrups and marijuana, which alter their behaviour and lead to addiction. These substances can cause serious mental health problems like depression, anxiety, and psychosis if misused.

Understanding how these chemicals work helps you recognise the dangers and make better choices about your health. It's crucial to know that once your brain chemistry changes, getting back to normal takes time and professional help.

💡 Exam tip: Always remember that the question may ask you to explain the mechanism—focus on how the substance affects neurotransmitters and brain function, not just list effects.
