Military Rule in West Africa: A Study Note

Military rule occurs when armed forces take control of government instead of elected civilians. This happens when soldiers believe the civilian government is corrupt, inefficient or threatening national security. Common causes include economic collapse, ethnic tensions, and weak democratic institutions.

Nigeria experienced military rule several times, most notably under General Sani Abacha from 1993 to 1998. His regime was marked by human rights abuses, particularly the execution of writer Ken Saro-Wiwa. Effects of military rule typically include suspended constitutions, restricted freedoms, and sometimes improved infrastructure but at the cost of democracy.

Other West African countries like Ghana and Guinea also endured military governments. While some regimes claimed to stabilize their nations, most ultimately delayed democratic development and left lasting economic damage.
