Map work is simply the skill of reading, interpreting and drawing information from maps and diagrams. In your SSCE exams, you'll need to identify features shown on maps, measure distances, calculate areas, and understand map symbols. Think of a map as a picture book of Earth where everything is represented by special signs and colours.

For example, if you study a map of Nigeria showing rainfall distribution, you'd notice the southern regions like Lagos have darker shading indicating higher rainfall, while the north appears lighter, showing drier conditions. You must learn what each colour, line, and symbol means on different map types—political maps show boundaries, physical maps show landforms, and climate maps use colour gradients.

Practicing with actual Nigerian topographic and thematic maps strengthens your skills. Understanding scale helps you measure real distances, while contour lines reveal elevation changes.
