Trigonometric Ratios and Rules

Trigonometric ratios are special fractions that compare the sides of right-angled triangles. The main three are sine (sin), cosine (cos), and tangent (tan). Think of them as shortcuts to find missing sides or angles without measuring everything physically.

Imagine you're standing at the base of the Lekki Lighthouse in Lagos, looking up at its top. You know the angle at which you're looking and the distance from the lighthouse base. Using sine or tangent, you can calculate the lighthouse's height without climbing it. This is practical trigonometry at work.

The sine ratio divides the opposite side by the hypotenuse, cosine divides the adjacent side by the hypotenuse, and tangent divides opposite by adjacent. Remember SOH-CAH-TOA—this mnemonic helps you recall which ratio uses which sides.
