Beverages are liquid drinks we consume for refreshment, nutrition, or both. Non-alcoholic beverages don't contain alcohol and are safe for everyone, including children. The main types you must know for WAEC include coffee and tea, which are stimulating drinks made from plant leaves and seeds; cocoa drink, a chocolate-based beverage popular in Nigeria; milk and egg drinks that provide protein and energy; fruit juices from fresh fruits; and traditional drinks like beef tea and lemongrass tea used for health benefits.
These drinks matter because they refresh our bodies, provide nutrients, and aid digestion. For example, Nigerians traditionally drink zobo (hibiscus juice) during celebrations and hot weather because it cools the body and provides vitamin C. When preparing beverages, you must use clean water, maintain proper temperatures, and avoid contamination to preserve their nutritional value and safety.
Beverages are liquid drinks that provide refreshment and nutrients to our bodies. They're classified into two main types: alcoholic beverages like beer and wine containing alcohol, and non-alcoholic beverages like tea, coffee, and cocoa. In Nigeria, popular beverages include palm wine, zobo drink, and Guinness beer. These drinks vary in their nutritive values—some provide vitamins and minerals while others offer mainly calories.
When preparing beverages, certain principles must guide us. First, use clean water to prevent contamination. Second, follow the correct temperature requirements; tea needs hot water around 80-90°C while cold drinks need chilling. Third, maintain proper proportions of ingredients for balanced taste and nutrition. Fourth, ensure proper storage to preserve freshness and prevent spoilage.
Understanding these principles helps us prepare safe, nutritious beverages that boost health and energy.
