Tables, graphs and charts are visual ways economists organize and display data to make patterns easy to spot. Think of them as the tools that transform messy numbers into clear pictures. A table arranges data in rows and columns, like showing Nigeria's inflation rates from 2020 to 2023. Graphs use lines, bars or curves to compare values, while charts like pie charts show how something breaks into parts—for example, how Nigeria's government budget is divided among education, health and defence.
These tools help you understand economic trends without reading long paragraphs of numbers. When you see Nigeria's unemployment rate plotted as a line graph over ten years, the trend jumps out instantly. Statistical measures like averages and percentages further simplify the data. Learning to read and create these representations is essential because economists communicate findings this way.
When economists analyze data like prices or incomes, they use three main tools to find the middle value. The arithmetic mean is simply the average—add all numbers and divide by how many you have. For example, if tomatoes cost ₦50, ₦60, and ₦70 in three markets, the mean price is ₦60. The median is the middle number when arranged in order, useful when some extreme values might mislead you. The mode is the value appearing most often—if most Nigerian traders charge ₦500 for a product, that's the mode.
Each tool serves different purposes. The mean works best for normal situations, but one extremely high or low value can distort it. The median ignores such extremes, making it reliable for income studies. The mode shows what's most popular, useful for understanding consumer preferences.
