WAEC SSCE Commerce
Study notes for C. Customer Services D. Sales Promotion — part of the WAEC SSCE Commerce syllabus. 3 learning objectives with explanations and exam tips.
Customer service involves supporting clients before and after purchasing products. Pre-sales service happens when you're still deciding to buy. This includes product information, demonstrations, and advice from shop assistants. For example, when you visit Jumia or a phone shop in Lagos, staff explain phone features, compare prices, and answer questions before you pay. This builds trust and helps you make good decisions.
After-sales service occurs once you've bought something. It includes warranty coverage, installation, repairs, and customer care lines. When you purchase a generator and the seller provides free servicing for six months, that's after-sales service. These services make customers feel valued and encourage them to return.
Both types are crucial for business success because satisfied customers become loyal customers who recommend the business to friends.
**
Customer service means the help and support a business gives to its customers before, during, and after buying products. It includes answering questions, solving complaints, and making sure customers feel valued. Good customer service keeps people coming back to buy again.
Sales promotion, on the other hand, refers to special activities businesses use to encourage customers to buy their products quickly. Examples include discounts, free gifts, competitions, and special offers. These promotional activities create excitement and urgency around products.
Think about how MTN Nigeria offers free airtime bonuses when you recharge your phone, or how supermarkets like Shoprite give discounts during festive periods—these are sales promotion techniques. Both customer service and sales promotion work together to attract new customers and keep existing ones satisfied.
Sales promotion involves encouraging customers to buy products through special offers and attractive methods. Trade fairs and exhibitions are events where businesses display their goods to attract buyers. For example, the Lagos International Trade Fair showcases Nigerian products yearly, helping companies reach thousands of potential customers in one location. Giving gifts or samples to customers is another effective method—supermarkets often offer free product samples to encourage purchases.
Demonstration means showing customers how a product works. When phone shops in Lagos display new smartphones and let customers test them, that's demonstration. Personal selling occurs when a sales representative talks directly to customers about products, explaining benefits and answering questions. This creates a personal connection that builds trust.
These methods are important because they inform customers about products, build brand loyalty, and increase sales. They make shopping interesting and convince people to try new items.
