Suspended floors are floor structures that span across supporting beams or walls without resting directly on the ground. Think of them as bridges inside buildings that separate different levels. In your home, the upper floor of a two-storey building is a suspended floor because it hangs between the walls below rather than sitting on soil. The ground floor can also be suspended if there's a basement or crawlspace underneath.
These floors serve important functions. They create distinct spaces for different activities—bedrooms upstairs, living areas downstairs. Suspended floors provide strength to distribute heavy loads like furniture and people across the building's walls and columns. They also improve ventilation by allowing air to circulate beneath them, which is crucial in Nigeria's humid climate. Additionally, they make buildings more stable and earthquake-resistant by connecting the structure properly.
Suspended floors are upper floors in buildings that hang above the ground level, supported by beams or walls rather than resting on the soil. Think of them like shelves mounted on your wall—they're held up by support structures.
For concrete suspended floors, reinforced concrete beams are cast first, then concrete slabs are placed on top of these beams. The reinforcement (steel rods) inside the concrete makes it strong enough to carry heavy loads without cracking. In timber upper floors, wooden joists (beams) are laid horizontally and supported by walls or columns, with wooden boards nailed on top to form the floor surface.
A practical example is a typical three-storey residential building in Lagos. The first suspended floor sits on reinforced concrete beams attached to the ground floor walls, while the second floor similarly rests on another set of beams. Both methods allow rooms below to remain open and useful space.
