Setting out is the process of marking out building lines on the ground before construction begins. Two main methods help builders ensure corners are perfectly square and walls are straight.
The 3:4:5 method uses simple mathematics. You measure 3 metres along one line, 4 metres along another line meeting it, then check if the diagonal distance is exactly 5 metres. If it is, your corner is perfectly square. This method works for any multiples of these numbers—6:8:10 or 9:12:15—making it flexible for different plot sizes. For example, when setting out a residential building in Lagos, a builder might use 6 metres and 8 metres to check a corner is true before laying foundations.
The builders' square method uses a physical right-angled tool placed on the ground to verify corners. Both methods are equally important and appear regularly in WAEC questions.
Setting out means marking the exact position of a building on the ground before construction begins. Think of it as drawing your building's outline on the land so workers know exactly where to dig and build.
To set out a building properly, you need specific tools. The surveyor's tape measures distances accurately, while the theodolite or dumpy level ensures the building is level and at the correct height. Ranging rods help mark out straight lines across the site. You'll also need the carpenter's level, plumb bob to check vertical alignment, and pegs with string to mark building corners and edges.
Consider a typical Lagos residential project: surveyors use these tools to mark where a three-bedroom bungalow will sit on the plot. Without proper setting out tools, the building foundation could be crooked or at the wrong location, causing serious structural problems later.
