A roof is the topmost covering of a building that protects the interior from rain, sun, wind and other weather elements. Think of it as the building's hat or umbrella. The main purpose of a roof is to provide shelter and prevent water from entering the structure, which would damage walls, furniture and everything inside.
There are several types of roofs used in Nigeria. The pitched or sloped roof is very common in southern Nigeria where heavy rainfall occurs—you see these in many homes in Lagos and Port Harcourt. The flat roof is popular in drier northern regions like Kano and Katsina. Some buildings use a combination called mansard roofs. Each type has different advantages depending on your location's climate and the building's design.
A roof must do several important jobs to protect your building properly. First, it shields the structure from rain, wind, and intense sun—crucial in Nigeria's tropical climate where heavy downpours damage unprotected buildings. Second, a good roof provides thermal insulation, keeping heat out during hot seasons and reducing cooling costs. Third, it must be strong enough to support its own weight plus loads from wind and occasionally, people working on it.
The roof also needs proper drainage so water doesn't pool and cause leaks or structural decay. Think of the modern houses in Lagos with pitched corrugated iron roofs—they shed water quickly and last longer than flat roofs in high-rainfall areas. Finally, roofs must be durable and resistant to weathering, maintaining their integrity for many years with minimal maintenance.

Wind can lift roof materials if they're not properly secured, so roofs need strong fixing methods like nailing, bolting, or special fasteners. Rain penetration is prevented through proper slope design and quality waterproofing materials such as corrugated iron sheets, tiles, or concrete that shed water away from the building. Lightning strikes are dangerous, which is why metal lightning conductors are installed on tall buildings to safely direct electrical current into the ground, protecting occupants. In Nigeria's harmattan season, strong winds threaten roof stability, making proper roof design and material selection crucial. A building in Lagos with inadequate roof ties suffered severe damage during heavy storms, teaching builders the importance of quality construction. The tropical climate here demands roofs that resist both heavy rainfall and intense sun damage. When constructing or maintaining roofs, quality materials and proper installation methods save lives and money.
