Fencing means building a barrier around a property to mark boundaries and provide security. Think of it as the wall or structure that separates your compound from your neighbour's land. There are several types of fences you must know: brick walls which are permanent and strong, wire fences that are affordable and easy to maintain, concrete fences that combine durability with modern appearance, and wooden fences that look attractive but require regular care.
Materials commonly used include bricks, cement, sand, concrete blocks, wire mesh, timber, and corrugated iron sheets. In Lagos, many residential properties use brick walls combined with concrete pillars because they withstand the coastal weather and provide excellent security.
When constructing a fence, you must first mark out the boundary line, dig foundation trenches, set up pillars at intervals, and then fill in the panels between pillars with your chosen material. Proper drainage around the fence base prevents water damage and extends its lifespan.
Gates are essential structures installed at property entrances to control access and provide security. Common gate types include swing gates that pivot on hinges, sliding gates that move horizontally along a track, and folding gates that fold back on themselves. Most Nigerian homes use wrought iron swing gates because they're affordable and durable in our climate.
Fixing gates requires proper installation of hinges, latches, and posts. The gate frame must be square and properly aligned before attachment. Posts must be deeply embedded in concrete foundations to prevent tilting. Gate production involves fabricating the frame from materials like steel or wood, then infilling with decorative panels or iron bars.
Quality gate production demands precision measurements and skilled welding or carpentry work. Proper alignment during fixing prevents sagging and ensures smooth operation for years. A well-constructed gate like those common in Lagos estates demonstrates professional external work standards.
Access roads are pathways built to connect a building site to the main road network. These roads allow workers, materials, and vehicles to reach the construction area easily. They're essential external works that must be completed before or during the building project.
Common materials for access roads include laterite, which is widely available and affordable across Nigeria. Crushed stone and gravel provide good drainage and durability. Concrete and bitumen (asphalt) are used for more permanent roads requiring heavy traffic. Sand and soil can serve as temporary solutions for short-term projects.
Consider a construction site in Lagos where developers build a road using laterite base, topped with gravel and sealed with bitumen to handle constant truck movement. This protects the main road from damage and prevents dust pollution in surrounding areas.
The quality of access roads directly affects construction speed and cost. Poor roads lead to vehicle damage and delayed material delivery.

In Nigeria, many people use local materials like palm fronds and laterite stones alongside modern options.
