Physical factors are the non-living components of an environment that affect living organisms. These include temperature, light, humidity, pH, and soil composition. Understanding how to measure these factors helps you study how organisms adapt to their habitats.
For example, in a Nigerian rainforest, you might measure temperature using a thermometer, humidity with a hygrometer, and light intensity using a light meter. These measurements show why certain plants thrive in shaded areas while others need direct sunlight. A farmer in Kaduna would measure soil pH to determine which crops grow best in their fields.
Simple measurement tools like thermometers, rain gauges, and soil testing kits are affordable and practical for fieldwork. Recording these measurements over time reveals patterns about how ecosystems function and change seasonally.
Edaphic factors are the soil characteristics that affect living organisms in an ecosystem. Chemical edaphic factors specifically refer to the chemical composition and properties of soil that influence plant growth and soil organism survival. These include soil pH, nutrient content like nitrogen, phosphorus, and potassium, organic matter, and salinity levels.
Soil pH determines whether soil is acidic, neutral, or alkaline, and this affects which plants can grow well. In Nigeria, the laterite soils found in southern regions are typically acidic, making them suitable for crops like cocoa and oil palm but requiring lime treatment for other crops. Nutrient availability also matters greatly—fertile loamy soils support better agriculture than sandy soils with poor nutrient retention.
Understanding these chemical properties helps predict what vegetation will thrive in different areas and how to manage soil for farming.
