The nose is the organ that allows you to smell different things around you. It contains special sensory cells called olfactory receptors that detect odour molecules floating in the air. When you inhale, these molecules enter your nasal cavity and trigger signals that travel to your brain, which then identifies what you're smelling.
The nose also warms and moistens the air you breathe before it reaches your lungs, protecting them from damage. Think about how you can immediately detect when someone is frying jollof rice in a Nigerian kitchen from another room—that's your nose at work! The nasal passage also contains tiny hairs and mucus that trap dust and germs, keeping them out of your respiratory system.
Your sense of smell is actually connected to your taste, which is why food tastes bland when you have a cold and your nose is blocked.
Your tongue is the sense organ responsible for taste. It's a muscular organ in your mouth covered with thousands of tiny taste buds that detect different flavours. These taste buds contain special cells that recognize four main tastes: sweet, salty, sour, and bitter. When you eat food like jollof rice or mangoes, chemicals from the food dissolve in your saliva and stimulate these taste receptors. The taste buds then send signals through nerves to your brain, which tells you what flavour you're experiencing. Beyond taste, your tongue also helps you chew food, form words for speaking, and swallow. It's covered with a moist lining that keeps it protected and functional. Your tongue works together with your nose to help you enjoy the full flavour of meals since smell also plays a major role in what you taste.
Your skin is your largest sense organ, covering your entire body and detecting different sensations. It contains millions of sensory receptors that pick up touch, temperature, pain, and pressure. These receptors send messages to your brain through nerves, which is why you can immediately feel when someone touches your arm or when hot water from a kettle gets near your hand.
The skin has different layers: the epidermis (outer layer), dermis (middle layer with blood vessels and nerves), and hypodermis (inner fatty layer). When you accidentally touch a hot pepper while cooking jollof rice, pain receptors in your skin instantly alert your brain, and you pull your hand away. This protective response happens automatically through nerve impulses traveling to your spinal cord and back.
Understanding how the skin's sensory receptors work is crucial for understanding human response to stimuli.
