Microorganisms are tiny living things so small you cannot see them with your naked eyes. They are everywhere around us—in the air you breathe, the food you eat, the water you drink, and even on your skin. These organisms include bacteria, fungi, viruses, and protozoans. Some are helpful to us, like the bacteria used to make yogurt and cheese in our Nigerian dairy products. Others can cause diseases if they get into our bodies, such as the bacteria responsible for typhoid fever, which is common in areas with poor sanitation. Microorganisms thrive in warm, moist environments, which is why Nigeria's tropical climate provides ideal conditions for rapid microbial growth. Understanding where these organisms live helps us prevent infections through basic hygiene practices like washing hands and boiling water.

Bacteria are single-celled living organisms so tiny you need a microscope to see them. They are found everywhere—in soil, water, air, and even inside your body. Most bacteria are harmless, but some cause serious diseases that affect human health.
In Nigeria, typhoid fever is a common bacterial disease spread through contaminated water and food. The bacterium *Salmonella typhi* causes this illness, which brings high fever and stomach problems. Other harmful bacteria include those causing tuberculosis and cholera, which remain health challenges in our communities.
However, not all bacteria are bad. Some help us digest food in our intestines, while others are used to make yogurt and cheese. Understanding bacteria helps us protect ourselves by practicing good hygiene, drinking clean water, and keeping our surroundings sanitary.
Microorganisms live everywhere—inside our bodies and in the food we eat. Some bacteria in your gut actually help you digest food and produce vitamins, so not all microorganisms are harmful. However, certain microorganisms like *Salmonella* and *Staphylococcus* can contaminate food and cause serious infections when we eat them. These organisms multiply rapidly under warm, moist conditions, forming visible colonies you might see as spots on spoilt food. In Nigeria, many food poisoning cases occur during the rainy season when warm weather speeds up microbial growth in foods left at room temperature. Understanding how microorganisms thrive helps us store food properly—keeping hot foods hot and cold foods cold prevents colony formation. Your body hosts trillions of microorganisms in your digestive system that are essential for health.

Public health is all about protecting the health of everyone in a community by preventing diseases before they spread. When we talk about microorganisms and public health, we're looking at how governments and health workers stop diseases caused by bacteria, viruses, and other tiny organisms from affecting many people at once.
Nigeria's cholera outbreaks in places like Lagos demonstrate why public health matters. Health officials work to provide clean water, improve sanitation, and educate people about hygiene. These actions prevent the cholera bacterium from spreading through contaminated water. Public health also includes vaccination programs, disease surveillance, and quarantine measures during outbreaks.
The key idea is that preventing disease in the population is cheaper and more effective than treating sick people afterward. When communities have good sewage systems, healthcare workers, and health education, microorganism-related diseases decrease significantly.
